The best places for photos and reels in Lisbon are the viewpoints (miradouros) of Santa Luzia and Senhora do Monte, Tram 28 passing the Sé cathedral, Praça do Comércio, Pink Street, LX Factory and the monuments of Belém. Shoot the old town in the early morning before the tuk-tuks arrive, and go to a west-facing viewpoint for sunset. Lisbon is hilly and the stone pavement is slippery, so wear good shoes.

Quick list: the top 10 spots

  1. Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol (Alfama): sunrise and early morning
  2. Tram 28 at the Sé cathedral (Sé/Alfama): before 9:30
  3. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (Graça): sunset
  4. Praça do Comércio and the Arco da Rua Augusta (Baixa): sunrise, or blue hour
  5. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (Bairro Alto): late afternoon
  6. Rua da Bica and Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Bica): morning for the street, sunset for the view
  7. Pink Street (Cais do Sodré): 9:00-11:00
  8. LX Factory (Alcântara): late morning, any day
  9. MAAT rooftop (Belém): golden hour
  10. Belém Tower (Belém): late afternoon

Also good: Jerónimos Monastery (Belém) and Rossio square (Baixa).

The spots

1. Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol (Alfama)

  • Best time and light: Sunrise and the first hours after it. The terraces look east and south over Alfama to the river, so the morning sun lights the roofs and the water. Before 9:00 it is quiet.
  • Reel idea: "POV: breakfast with a view." Start on the blue and white tiles (azulejos), pan to the pergola, end on the red roofs and the river.
  • Photo tip: At Santa Luzia, stand under the pergola and use 1x to frame yourself with the flowers and tiles. At Portas do Sol, use 2x to stack the roofs, the white dome of the National Pantheon and the river behind you.
  • Good to know: Free and always open. Tram 28 stops right here (Miradouro de Santa Luzia), and tuk-tuks park along the road from mid-morning. Watch your bag.

2. Tram 28 at the Sé cathedral (Sé/Alfama)

  • Best time and light: Before 9:30, when the trams are less full and the street is quiet. Late afternoon also works, when the sun is lower and softer.
  • Reel idea: "Wait for it." Stand still on the sidewalk, let the yellow tram pass behind you, and cut on the moment it clears the frame.
  • Photo tip: From the small square in front of the Sé, use 1x and keep the cathedral towers and the tram in one frame. From the slope just above, use 2x for a tight shot of the tram climbing the hill.
  • Good to know: Stay on the sidewalk and never stand on the tracks. The trams are close to the walls and the drivers cannot swerve. Tram 28 runs between Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique (Prazeres). Queues at Martim Moniz can be long in high season, and crowded trams are known for pickpockets. For photos, it is easier to watch the tram than ride it.

3. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (Graça)

  • Best time and light: Sunset. It is one of the highest viewpoints in the city, with the castle, the Baixa, the river and the 25 de Abril bridge in front of you. Early morning is the quietest time.
  • Reel idea: "Golden hour in Lisbon." A slow walk to the low wall, a turn to the camera, then the view as the sun drops.
  • Photo tip: Sit on the wall facing the camera and use 1x with the castle over your shoulder. Use 3x to pull the bridge and the river closer.
  • Good to know: Free. It gets busy at sunset and tuk-tuks drive up the hill. Tram 28 to Graça, then a short steep walk up Rua da Senhora do Monte.

4. Praça do Comércio and the Arco da Rua Augusta (Baixa)

  • Best time and light: Sunrise, when the square is almost empty and the yellow arcades glow. Blue hour is also good, when the arch is lit.
  • Reel idea: "Run to the river." Start under the arch, run across the square and stop at the Cais das Colunas river steps.
  • Photo tip: Stand in the middle of the square and use 0.5x to fit the whole arch and the arcades. On the river steps, use 1x and keep the horizon straight.
  • Good to know: The square is free and always open. The viewpoint on top of the arch has a ticket and set opening hours, so check before you go. The river steps are wet and slippery near the water. Metro: Terreiro do Paço (blue line).

5. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (Bairro Alto)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon. The terrace looks east, so the low sun behind you lights the castle and the old town across the valley.
  • Reel idea: "Lisbon from above, in 3 cuts." The garden, the wide view, then you leaning on the railing with the castle behind.
  • Photo tip: Use 2x or 3x on the castle. For a portrait, stand by the railing and keep the castle just above your shoulder at 1x.
  • Good to know: Free and open all day. The Glória funicular next to it is not running at the time of writing, so walk up from Restauradores or come down from Bairro Alto. Check Carris for news before you plan on it.

6. Rua da Bica and Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Bica)

  • Best time and light: Morning for Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, the steep street that drops to the river. Sunset at the Santa Catarina viewpoint, a few minutes away, with the 25 de Abril bridge in the view.
  • Reel idea: "Walking down Lisbon." Start at the top of the street and walk slowly down the middle of the steps toward the river.
  • Photo tip: Stand at the top of the street and use 2x to squeeze the houses, the rails and the river into one frame. At Santa Catarina, use 3x on the bridge at sunset.
  • Good to know: People live on Rua da Bica, and there are small bars along it. Keep your voice down and do not pose on doorsteps. The famous yellow funicular has been stopped for safety checks since 2025, and Carris has given no reopening date, so you will see the tracks but not the car. Metro: Baixa-Chiado (green and blue lines).

7. Pink Street (Cais do Sodré)

  • Best time and light: 9:00 to 11:00. Rua Nova do Carvalho is a nightlife street, so it is loud and full at night and quiet in the morning.
  • Reel idea: "Outfit check on the pink street." Walk toward the camera in one outfit, step out of frame, walk back in another.
  • Photo tip: Stand in the middle and use 0.5x low to the ground, so the pink road leads to you. Use 2x from under the Rua do Alecrim bridge to frame the whole pink street.
  • Good to know: Free. The street was painted pink in 2011, when the old port area was renewed. Bars and shops open at different times, so ask before you film inside. Metro and train: Cais do Sodré.

8. LX Factory (Alcântara)

  • Best time and light: Late morning, before the lunch crowd.
  • Reel idea: "Bookshop day." Walk into Ler Devagar, the bookshop inside an old printing hall, look up at the tall shelves, then cut to coffee outside.
  • Photo tip: Use 0.5x inside the bookshop for the high shelves. Outside, use 2x to frame the red 25 de Abril bridge over the old factory roofs.
  • Good to know: Free to walk in. Shops and cafés keep their own hours, and on Sundays there is the LX Market with more people. Ask staff before you film inside a shop. Train: Alcântara-Mar. Tram 15E: Calvário.

9. MAAT rooftop (Belém)

  • Best time and light: Golden hour, when the curved white roof turns warm and the river shines.
  • Reel idea: "Slow-mo walk on the wave." Walk up the curved roof toward the camera, with the bridge behind you.
  • Photo tip: Use 0.5x from low down to show the curve of the roof. From the top, use 2x on the 25 de Abril bridge.
  • Good to know: You can walk on the roof without a museum ticket. The museum is closed on Tuesdays, and roof access can depend on museum hours and events, so check before you go. Tram 15E or train to Belém.

10. Belém Tower (Belém)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon. The light is softer, and at sunset the sky behind the tower turns orange.
  • Reel idea: "Then and now." A wide shot of the old stone tower on the water, then a quick cut to you on the riverside path.
  • Photo tip: Walk along the river path east of the tower and use 1x to keep the tower and the water in frame. Use 0.5x from the lawn for a low, dramatic angle.
  • Good to know: Outside, the tower is free to see any time. It reopened on 27 May 2026 after about a year of restoration work. Visits inside are now timed, with a small number of people every half hour. It is open 9:30 to 17:30 (last entry 17:00) and closed on Mondays. Buy tickets online or at the Jerónimos ticket office.

11. Jerónimos Monastery (Belém)

  • Best time and light: First hour after opening, or late afternoon. The long stone front faces the river, so midday sun is harsh and flat.
  • Reel idea: "Arch after arch." Walk slowly along the cloister arches with the camera tracking beside you.
  • Photo tip: Outside, step back across the garden and use 0.5x for the full front. In the cloister, stand in a corner and use 1x so the arches repeat into the distance.
  • Good to know: Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30. Closed on Mondays. The church is free with its own entrance, and the cloister needs a ticket. Queues for the cloister can be long, so book online. Check the rules at the door before you use a tripod. Tram 15E: Mosteiro Jerónimos.

12. Rossio and the wave pavement (Baixa)

  • Best time and light: Early morning, or a cloudy day for soft light.
  • Reel idea: "Optical illusion walk." Film from above as you walk over the wave-pattern pavement, then cut to the fountains.
  • Photo tip: Find a step or a café terrace a little higher than the square and use 0.5x straight down. Use 1x at Rossio train station for the horseshoe doors.
  • Good to know: Free. A busy square with traffic around it, so cross only at the lights. Metro: Rossio (green line) or Restauradores (blue line).

Best time of year and light in Lisbon

  • Spring (March to May): Mild and green, with some rain. Late May brings the purple jacaranda trees. Sunset moves from about 18:45-19:45 in March to about 20:45 by late May.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot, dry and bright. Sunrise is around 6:10-7:00 and sunset around 20:10-21:05. June is the month of the city's popular festivals, with decorations and street parties in Alfama. Midday light is very hard, so shoot before 10:00 and after 18:30.
  • Autumn (September to November): Warm in September and October, with fewer crowds and softer light. Sunset is around 19:15-19:30 in late September and about 17:15-17:35 in November, after the clocks change.
  • Winter (December to February): Mild but rainy. Sunrise is around 7:30-7:55 and sunset around 17:15-18:30.

Golden hour is the hour before sunset. Blue hour is the 20-30 minutes after sunset, when the lights come on and the sky is still blue.

Drones: Lisbon's airport is inside the city, and most of Lisbon is restricted airspace. Flying needs authorization from ANAC, and aerial filming can need a separate authorization from AAN. Check the official Voa na Boa map and the current rules before you go. For most visitors, the easy answer is to leave the drone at home. Keep tripods small and out of the way on narrow streets and viewpoints.

5 reel ideas that work in Lisbon

  1. POV: first morning in Lisbon. Coffee and a pastry, the tiles at Santa Luzia, a yellow tram passing, the river. One clip per beat.
  2. Wait for the tram. Phone still on a wall, you in the frame, the tram passes behind you. Cut right as it leaves.
  3. Lisbon stairs. Lisbon is all steps. Film yourself walking up a long staircase in Alfama or Bica, then show the view at the top.
  4. Outfit transition. Pink Street or LX Factory walls work well. Keep the phone still, walk out in one outfit, walk back in another.
  5. Partner photo vs. pro photo. Your partner's quick shot at a viewpoint, then the same spot shot by someone who knows the light and the angles.

What to wear for photos in Lisbon

  • Colors: Lisbon is yellow trams, terracotta roofs, white stone and blue tiles. White, cream, terracotta, olive, cobalt blue and soft yellow all fit well. Bright red pops against the white Belém monuments.
  • Shapes: Linen shirts, light dresses and wide trousers move well in the wind from the river.
  • Shoes: The white stone pavement is slippery, even when dry, and the hills are steep. Wear flat shoes with grip.
  • Layers: Bring a light jacket. It gets windy at the viewpoints, even in summer.
  • Churches: Cover your shoulders inside the Sé and the Jerónimos church.
