The best photo spots in Yerevan are the Cascade (with Mount Ararat behind the city on clear days), Republic Square at night, Northern Avenue, the Opera House and Swan Lake, Mother Armenia in Victory Park and the old Kond district. Go early in the morning for clear Ararat views and soft light, and come back at blue hour for the fountains and city lights. On clear mornings, the Cascade and Victory Park give you Ararat right behind the city.

Quick list: the top 10 spots

  1. The Cascade (Kentron): early morning, or sunset from the top
  2. Republic Square (Kentron): blue hour, when the lights come on
  3. Northern Avenue and Abovyan Street (Kentron): morning, before the shops open
  4. Opera House and Swan Lake (Kentron): golden hour and evening
  5. Mother Armenia, Victory Park (hill above the center): clear mornings
  6. Kond old district (Kentron, above the Hrazdan gorge): late afternoon
  7. Blue Mosque courtyard (Mashtots Avenue): afternoon visiting hours
  8. Vernissage market (near Republic Square): weekend mornings
  9. Matenadaran steps (top of Mashtots Avenue): morning or afternoon
  10. Saryan Street (Kentron): evening, when the wine bars light up

The spots

1. The Cascade (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Early morning, when the steps are empty and the air is clearest. From the top you look south over the city to Mount Ararat. Sunset is also great: the city turns gold and the lights come on below you.
  • Reel idea: "POV: you climbed 572 steps for this view." Start at the bottom with the stairs filling the frame, cut to the reveal at the top.
  • Photo tip: At the bottom, use 0.5x from a low angle to show how tall the stairs are. At the top, switch to 2x or 3x: zoom makes Ararat look bigger behind the city.
  • Good to know: The Cascade has 572 steps and five terraces, with sculptures from the Cafesjian Center for the Arts along the way. There is also a free indoor escalator, listed as open every day 8:00 to 20:00. The outdoor stairs and sculpture garden are always open. Nearest metro: Yeritasardakan, about a 10-minute walk.

2. Republic Square (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Blue hour, just after sunset, when the buildings light up. Early morning is the only time it is quiet.
  • Reel idea: "Day vs night" transition. Film the same spin in front of the History Museum in daylight, then again at night with the fountains behind you.
  • Photo tip: Stand near the oval stone pattern in the middle of the square and use 0.5x to get the curved arcades of the pink and yellow tuff buildings.
  • Good to know: The singing fountains in front of the museum usually run from spring to autumn, with an evening music and light show. In June 2026 the show started at 21:00. The schedule changes by season, so check before you go. Nearest metro: Republic Square (Hanrapetutyan Hraparak).

3. Northern Avenue and the Dalan courtyard (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Morning, before 10:00, when the walk is almost empty. The tall buildings make soft shade most of the day.
  • Reel idea: Slow outfit walk toward the camera, then a quick cut to a coffee on Abovyan Street.
  • Photo tip: Stand in the middle of the avenue and use 1x for a straight, symmetric shot of the long walk toward the Opera.
  • Good to know: Northern Avenue is a 450-metre pedestrian street from Abovyan Street to Freedom Square by the Opera. At 12 Abovyan Street, an archway leads to Dalan, a gallery, shop and restaurant in an old courtyard. It is a business, so ask the staff before you film, and buying a coffee is a nice thank-you.

4. Opera House and Swan Lake (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Golden hour, about one hour before sunset, and the evening when the Opera is lit.
  • Reel idea: Winter: a "first time on ice in Yerevan" skating clip. Summer: a lakeside walk and photo dump.
  • Photo tip: Use 0.5x from the lake side to get the water and the Opera in one frame. For a portrait, use 2x with the trees behind you.
  • Good to know: In most winters Swan Lake becomes an outdoor ice rink. Dates and fees change each year, so check before you go. Nearest metro: Yeritasardakan.

5. Mother Armenia, Victory Park (hill above the center)

  • Best time and light: Clear mornings. The platform around the statue gives one of the widest views of Yerevan, with Ararat behind it on a good day.
  • Reel idea: Slow pan from the huge statue down to you at the railing, then the city and the mountain.
  • Photo tip: Shoot from low with 0.5x so the statue fills the sky. For the view, use 3x to bring Ararat closer.
  • Good to know: The park and statue are free. The military museum in the base is closed on Mondays; check its hours first. This is a war memorial, so keep reels calm. You can walk here from the top of the Cascade.

6. Kond old district (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon, when warm side light hits the old walls and murals.
  • Reel idea: "Getting lost in old Yerevan": short clips of stairs, doors, cats and painted walls, cut to the beat.
  • Photo tip: The lanes are narrow, so use 0.5x. For details on doors and murals, use 2x.
  • Good to know: Kond is one of the oldest parts of the city, between the center and the Hrazdan gorge. Since 2018 the artist Yerevantropics has painted murals here as the open-air Kond Gallery, for example at the corner of Frik and St. Hovhannes streets. People live here. Keep your voice down, do not enter yards, and ask before you film people or their homes.

7. Blue Mosque courtyard (Mashtots Avenue)

  • Best time and light: Afternoon visiting hours. The garden gives soft shade on the blue tiles.
  • Reel idea: A slow, calm walk under the arches with ambient sound.
  • Photo tip: Use 1x and frame the blue dome through the trees of the garden.
  • Good to know: This is an active mosque. Entry is free, but hours are short (often around 15:00 to 18:00) and change on holidays. Wear long trousers or a long skirt and cover your shoulders; women need a headscarf for the prayer hall. Do not film during prayers, and ask staff before taking photos inside.

8. Vernissage market (near Republic Square)

  • Best time and light: Weekend mornings, when most sellers are there. Weekdays are much quieter.
  • Reel idea: "Things I found at Yerevan's flea market": quick cuts of carpets, Soviet badges, wood carvings and paintings.
  • Photo tip: Use 2x for details like rugs or ceramics, with your hands in the frame.
  • Good to know: Free entry, a short walk from Republic Square. Ask sellers before you film their stall or face.

9. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft on the stone.
  • Reel idea: Slow walk up the wide front steps with the bell towers above you.
  • Photo tip: Use 0.5x from the bottom of the steps to fit the whole cathedral.
  • Good to know: It is the largest cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church and an active church. Outside photos are fine. Inside, be quiet, do not film during services, and wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Next to Zoravar Andranik metro.

10. Matenadaran (top of Mashtots Avenue)

  • Best time and light: Morning for quiet steps; afternoon for warmer light on the stone.
  • Reel idea: "Library walk": walk up the steps past the big stone statue of Mesrop Mashtots, then stop and look back down the avenue.
  • Photo tip: Stand at the bottom of the steps and use 1x for a straight, symmetric shot.
  • Good to know: This is the museum of ancient Armenian manuscripts. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:50, with paid entry. Filming with a professional camera needs permission from the director. For phone photos inside, ask at the ticket desk.

11. Lovers' Park (Baghramyan Avenue)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon in spring and autumn, when the trees and pond look their best.
  • Reel idea: A couple's "walk and look back" clip on the small bridges and paths.
  • Photo tip: Use 2x for portraits with the trees behind you; the zoom blurs the background a bit.
  • Good to know: A small, free park in a Japanese garden style, with a little amphitheater. It is next to Marshal Baghramyan metro.

12. Hrazdan gorge and Victory Bridge (west of the center)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon and sunset, when the light comes from the west into the gorge.
  • Reel idea: "City or nature?" Start in the busy center, walk through the tunnel, then reveal the green gorge.
  • Photo tip: From Victory Bridge, use 1x for the gorge and the big Ararat brandy factory building on the hill behind.
  • Good to know: Victory Bridge is about a 20 to 30-minute walk from Republic Square, along Mashtots Avenue. A tunnel from the Saryan Street side also leads down into the gorge. The brandy factory offers tasting tours, which you book ahead; ask the guide before you film inside.

13. Saryan Street (Kentron)

  • Best time and light: Early evening, when the bars and cafes switch on their lights and the street fills up.
  • Reel idea: "A night out in Yerevan." Clink glasses on a terrace, then cut to a slow walk down the street at blue hour.
  • Photo tip: Sit on a terrace and use 2x for a soft background of lights. Ask the staff before you film inside.
  • Good to know: Martiros Saryan Street is known as Yerevan's "wine street", with many wine bars, cafes and restaurants. It gets busy in the evening, so book a table if you want a terrace seat.

14. Erebuni Fortress (Erebuni district)

  • Best time and light: Late afternoon on a clear day, when the old walls turn warm and you look out over the city.
  • Reel idea: "Older than Rome." Walk along the ancient walls, then pan out to the modern city below.
  • Photo tip: Use 0.5x low to the ground to show the long stone walls and the sky.
  • Good to know: Erebuni is the ancient fortress where Yerevan's history began, on Arin Berd hill in the south-east of the city. There is a museum at the foot of the hill and the visit is paid. Opening hours differ between sources (usually closed on Mondays), so check before you go. It is a short taxi ride from the center.

A place to visit, not to pose: The Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial, on a hill above the Hrazdan gorge, is a place of mourning. The outdoor memorial is always open; the museum is closed on Mondays. Take quiet photos if you wish, but please no posing, dancing or trend reels there.

Best time of year and light in Yerevan

Spring (April to June) is the best time for photos: green city, mild weather, and often snow on Ararat. Autumn (September to October) is just as good, with warm colors.

Summer (July and August) is hot and dry. Shoot before 9:00 or after 19:00. In June the sun rises around 5:30 and sets around 20:40. Heat haze often hides Ararat in summer, so do not plan your trip around the mountain in these months.

Winter (December to February) is cold, and some days bring snow. Short days help: in mid-December the sun rises around 8:15 and sets around 17:35, so golden hour is easy to catch. Cold, dry days can give very clear Ararat views.

About Ararat: The mountain is 5,137 metres high and stands across the border in Turkey. You cannot plan for it: clouds and haze hide it on many days. The best chance is early morning, after rain or on a cold, dry day. Look out of your window before you go up the Cascade or to Victory Park. If it is hidden, shoot the city and try again the next morning.

5 reel ideas that work in Yerevan

  1. "POV: 572 steps later" – Film your feet climbing the Cascade, then cut to the view from the top. If Ararat is out, end on 3x zoom.
  2. "Pink City" photo dump – Yerevan is called the Pink City because of its pink tuff stone. Collect 8 to 10 clips of pink walls, arches and doors, and cut them to a fast beat.
  3. Day to night transition – Shoot the same move at Republic Square twice: once in daylight, once with the fountains or night lights. Match your position, then jump cut.
  4. "Old Yerevan vs new Yerevan" – Quick cut from Kond's narrow lanes and murals to the wide, modern Northern Avenue.
  5. "Wait for the mountain" – At the top of the Cascade or at Mother Armenia, film a slow pan that ends on Ararat. Add text with the time you woke up for it.

What to wear for photos in Yerevan

  • Colors: The city is pink, peach and warm stone. White, cream, light blue, sage green and soft pastels look great against it. Bold red or cobalt blue stands out well at the Cascade.
  • Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The Cascade stairs, Kond's uneven lanes and the old stones at Erebuni are hard in heels. Bring your nice shoes in a bag.
  • Churches and the mosque: Pack a light scarf and something that covers your shoulders and knees. It is easy to throw on over your outfit.
  • Season: Light linen and a hat in summer; a camel or cream coat in winter.
